Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche, one of the greatest Tibetan Buddhist teachers of the 20th century said: “There are two types of mindfulness: deliberate and effortless.” Deliberate mindfulness includes one-pointed focus and nonjudgmentally observing the changing contents of our mind and body. The second approach, effortless mindfulness, shifts from focusing on the contents of mind to discovering the context, an ever-present awareness that is already awake and free of suffering.
Effortless mindfulness is an advanced yet simple, next natural stage of mindfulness. Rather than concentrating to calm and focus your mind, we will learn to intentionally shift into awake awareness, which is already calm, intelligent, and able to focus effortlessly. The primary practice is small glimpses, many times in the midst of the day.
In this 10 week course we will learn how awake awareness is energetically embodied and open-hearted, so that we can experience well-being and live a compassionate life. Classes will consist of talks, meditation, glimpse practices, and contemplations. Readings will be assigned from The Way of Effortless Mindfulness by Loch Kelly. Both Loch and Scott, the instructor for this course, studied with Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche. Students are responsible for obtaining their own copies of the book. Classes will be recorded and made available on a weekly basis. Participants are encouraged to use the recorded meditations for daily practice and to re-listen to the classes.
This is a Glimpses Level course for those interested in the meditative approach of direct awakening. Students who enroll in this course are strongly encouraged to register for the one-day retreat The Way of Effortless Mindfulness with Loch Kelly scheduled on Saturday October 12.
You guys are serious and laid back at the same time which I really like. I feel that you have acquired real wisdom and experience in the areas that you teach, but I love how you really do “meet people where they are”.Past Course Participant
Walking the path under the guidance of Scott and Nancy has transformed my life. I now live it from a place of love, joy, compassion, and peace. When inevitable turmoil happens, it’s transient and I can move through it. I’m no longer whip-sawed around. Each day feels enveloped in gratitude and I feel held by a loving presence.N.
